Navigating Uncertainty: Canadian Colleges Extend a Reassuring Hand to Indian Students Amid Diplomatic Strain.
Toronto, October 06, 2023
In the wake of escalating diplomatic tension between India and Canada, Canadian universities are reaching out to reassure Indian students of their safety and academic prospects, aiming to mitigate the concerns arising from the recent crisis. The discord between the two nations began in September when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested that New Delhi might have been involved in the murder of a Khalistani terrorist in British Columbia, an allegation vehemently denied by India.
India stands as Canada's largest source of global students, constituting nearly 40% of study permit holders and contributing over C$20 billion ($14.6 billion) to the Canadian economy annually. As more than 100,000 Indian students gear up for English language proficiency tests and financial arrangements to study in Canada next year, universities and colleges are taking proactive steps to allay fears and preserve the booming business of international education.
Reassurance Amidst Uncertainty
Speaking to Reuters, Joseph Wong, the vice president of the University of Toronto, which enrolled more than 2,400 students from India in the last academic year, highlighted collaborative efforts with Indian educational institutions and foundations. "We've reached out to various partners in India to reassure our progress and commitment to continuing collaboration," Wong said.Numerous universities and consultants in both Canada and India are
actively engaged in efforts to reassure students, assuring them that the
current diplomatic impasse is likely to be short-lived.
Concerns and Precautions
Amidst
concerns about safety in Canada and uncertainty surrounding upcoming
semesters, students and their families are anxious. Ashok Kumar Bhatia,
President of the Association of Consultants for Overseas Studies,
emphasized the prevailing worry among Indian students about their
well-being in the backdrop of heightened diplomatic tensions. To address
these concerns, consultancies like IDP Education are sending video
messages to soothe nerves and provide accurate information.
Colleges
like Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ontario, are witnessing a surge in
inquiries from students considering deferring their courses or opting
for online classes. College President John Tibbits expressed concern
about the uncertainty, particularly regarding potential changes in visa
policies and how individuals might react. The institution is investing
C$50 million annually in student support services to assist those
affected
Impact on Indian Families
The diplomatic
row's ripples are felt most acutely in India, where families, especially
in Punjab, are deeply concerned. In this state, which is home to almost
a quarter of India's population, families are facing dilemmas about the
future of their children's education in Canada. In cities like
Amritsar, a significant number of students moved to Canada last year,
seeking better educational opportunities.
Families like that of
Jiwan Sharma, a taxi driver, are re - evaluating their decisions. Sharma,
who invested his life savings to send his son to Canada with the hope of
a better future, is now contemplating the wisdom of that decision. "I have put my lifelong savings worth over 2.50 million Rupees (30,049.20 US$) for sending our son to Canada, hoping he would settle there and help us in old age," Sharma stated.
Hope for Resolution
Despite the
prevailing uncertainty, Rhonda Lenton, President of York University,
expressed confidence in the abilities of the two governments to resolve
the situation. However, Gurbakhshish Singh, a commerce student in
Amritsar, voiced disappointment over the deteriorating relations between
India and Canada, fearing for his future prospects.

As the
diplomatic standoff continues, Canadian colleges and universities are
extending a reassuring hand to their Indian students. These institutions
are not only safeguarding their economic interests but also embodying
the spirit of international education - one that transcends political
boundaries and fosters a sense of unity among students from diverse
backgrounds. Amidst the uncertainty, the hope for a peaceful resolution
remains, ensuring that the dreams and aspirations of thousands of Indian
students are not shattered by geopolitical tensions.
